Udaipur

The City of Lakes

Rajasthan

Floating palaces, marble pavilions and the quiet grandeur of Mewar.

Udaipur was built around water in a region defined by its absence. The Mewar rulers dammed a valley into Lake Pichola and raised their palaces from its surface — a decision that still shapes how the city feels six centuries later: unhurried, reflective, more concerned with light on water than with speed.

The City Palace complex climbs the eastern shore in a single continuous wall of balconies and cupolas, added to by successive maharanas for four hundred years without ever quite losing its coherence. Across the water, the Lake Palace sits where it has always sat, marble against blue.
