Varanasi is older than most reliable records of it — a city built along a curve of the Ganges where cremation, worship and daily life have shared the same steps for at least three thousand years. Dawn on the ghats is not a performance staged for visitors; it is simply what the city does every morning, and always has.

By evening, the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat draws the river's edge into flame and chant. Boats drift close enough to feel the heat. Upstream and down, smaller ghats keep their own quieter rituals, unattended by anyone but the people who have always kept them.
